The story of HASKEL doesn't begin in 2016, though that's when it took a new turn for me. It stretches back to the early 20th century, to Bessarabia, where a talented Jewish tailor named Naum lived. His sister ran a hat shop in the heart of what was then called "Little Paris" (Chisinau). Naum, known for his dedication and skill, even received an award in France for a revolutionary, adjustable pattern-making tool!
Years passed, Naum married, and his family grew. Among his daughters, a long-awaited son arrived, Joseph, who received a special double name. Young Joseph grew up surrounded by the warmth and skills passed down through his family. This talent proved invaluable when the family faced exile in Kazakhstan, where resources were scarce. But thanks to Naum's sewing machine and his craft, they persevered, even amidst the hardships.
When they finally returned to Chisinau, the city had changed forever. Gone were the hat shop and the charm of "Little Paris." Yet, the city retained a certain stylish spirit, with women still seeking fashionable attire and men wanting to make a statement. Naum's tailoring skills resurfaced, this time crafting not robes but flamboyant costumes for the theatre actors.
Life took unexpected turns for Joseph (now known as Osik). He married a former beauty queen from Ufa who became a renowned pediatrician. Together, they had a son and eventually a granddaughter, the very one who carries the story forward.
Uncle Osik, despite his occasional grumbling, was a kind and resourceful man. He had a unique bond with a Jewish friend involved in a less-than-conventional line of work. Osik's wife remained impeccably dressed, and countless acquaintances brought him clothes for alterations. He always managed to surprise them with a thoughtful, handmade gift, a potholder, or perhaps some colorful boxers – all stitched on the same trusty machine. His dry humor and hidden kindness, disguised as gruffness, made him a favorite, especially with the children. He'd even dispense medical advice on occasion, a testament to his years spent observing his wife's profession. Despite a life filled with resilience and innovation (think IKEA engineer!), his dedication to the theatre earned him a simple medal for service, not a Parisian designer's recognition. He lived a quiet life, passing away peacefully after the loss of his son.
Though she wasn't born until after his sewing machine fell silent, a mystical connection seems to link Osik to his great-granddaughter. On her bedroom door hangs a sign listing those allowed entry, and among the living names rests another – Osik. A reminder, perhaps, of a legacy that transcends time.
For me, the story truly began in 2016. Instead of the latest phone, I felt an undeniable pull towards a sewing machine. Maybe it was a subconscious connection to my heritage, or maybe a desire to create something beautiful. Whatever the reason, picking up that machine felt like a homecoming.
HASKEL is more than just a brand; it's a continuation of this remarkable family legacy. It's a celebration of their ingenuity, resourcefulness, and unwavering love for the art of sewing. We strive to create high-quality, timeless pieces that empower you to express your own unique style – a legacy stitched in time.
